Attila Wind

Attila Wind is a Hungarian songwriter, guitarist, vocalist and poet. He is best known as the lead singer-songwriter and guitarist of the indie rock band, Dawnstar.

Lyrical influences
Wind has been the one and only lyricist of the band. During his university studies (English and Italian language and literature) he read poems by many authors but he has been mainly influenced by English Romanticism (Blake, Wordsworth and Byron). However, Wind has been an avid reader of song lyrics and he mentions Kurt Cobain as one of his favorite 'poet'. In the early demos of Ansellia, Wind wrote poet-like lyrics for the songs. However, for the demo Vanity Star he preferred to write in a more straightforward way. A recurrent theme in Wind's lyricism is love, more precisely either platonic love or disappointment in love. Apart from topics of relationships, Wind also included other topics such as social issues and politics in his lyrics. The most notable influence of his political stance can be hear or read on the band's first EP, Change The World. For example, the song Change The World is a political song which deals with dictatorship, the human abuse of nature, and globalism. On the same record, Wind also exposed his opinion about the war on Iraq and the continuous suicide bombings and terrorism, see and listen: Don't Die A Martyr For Me. An example for social issues is Scarlet which present the life of a prostitute and deals with women rights. Irony is also a recurrent literary technique which is usually employed by Wind. An example of irony is Cougar De Luxe.

Musical influences
Since Wind has been the main songwriter of Dawnstar, his musical taste plays a key role in the composition. During his musical journey Wind has collected many ideas which he also embedded in his songs. However the most striking influence on his songwriting has had the 1990s grunge era. From Dawnstar's first demo, Vanity star to the latest release, Saturnine Valentines, we can hear the effect of Kurt Cobain's guitar playing. However, Wind has worked a lot to depart from the grunge era and to include other types of genres.

Late 1960s
As a child Wind was affected by his parents' and his relatives' musical preferences. Wind mentioned in an interview that his uncle's musical taste has had the biggest effect on him. One of the first records he remembers listening is Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar. "I was listening to the tape cassette when I was 6 or 7. I was amazed by riff of Heaven On Their Minds". The other musical he was listening to was Hair. "I remember watching the film for the first time when I was 6 or 7 with my mom. I got hooked on immediately". His uncle often gave Wind cassettes such as The Wall by Pink Floyd. "I took it granted that no other music genres exist. It was kind of obvious that I was listening to bands like Pink Floyd, Deep Purple and The Doors".

Grunge
The biggest influence on Wind was the grunge era in the 1990s. Although one of his first cassettes he bought was Appetite for Destruction by Guns N' Roses, the day when he saw the music video, Smells Like Teen Spirit on MTV changed his life. He was so impressed by the energy and the eccentricity and vulnerability of Kurt Cobain that he decided to start playing the guitar and most importantly start composing songs. He started collecting cassettes, CDs, posters, and badges in connection with Nirvana. He spent hours at the library photocopying music sheets by Nirvana and other bands. At home he learnt playing Nirvana songs which he also embedded in the band's first demo Vanity Star. The impact of Cobain's composition style and chord progression has been undeniable when someone listens to Dawnstar. Actually, Ansellia's second demo, Vanity Star, included Nirvana covers which later were transformed into Dawnstar songs. Let The Sun Shine was initially inspired by Smells Like Teen Spirit, Never Say Die was based on Come As You Are, Here She Comes was a reminiscent of In Bloom, Until This Day was modeled on Lithium. However, the Never Say Die EP, released in 2002, showed a distinct departure from the Nirvana affected grunge era.

Metal
As a teenager Wind realized quite fast that listening to Nirvana is not eccentric because at that time every second rocker was listening to them. Therefore he decided to start his musical journey and he started discovering other genres and bands. First, he started looking for bands which are similar to Nirvana such as Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam. However, aged 16 he started to look for aggression in music and he delved into metal music. One of the first bands he was impressed by was the thrash metal band Sepultura. However, one or two year later he found his genre 'doom metal' which was a kind of mix of Cobain's depression and Sepultura's aggression. During this period he was listening to bands like Tiamat, Type O Negative, My Dying Bride, and Anathema. In the 2000s Wind's enthusiasm to metal music decline because he got bored with the excessive use of distortion. However, there were some bands that he was keen on listening to them. One of them were the American nu metal band, Deftones. He was amazed by the variety of guitar effects the band were using. For example, he decided to use the flanger pedal, Boss BF-3, in Under Your Wings in the same way as Deftones were using in Digital Bath.

Trip-hop era
By the age of 20 Wind went through the different rock genres and he collected a lot of ideas how he would put together his own songs. In his early 20s he started listening to bands like Portishead and Massive Attack. For example he bought a termolo pedal, the Boss TR-2, after listening to Portishead's Sour Times. He even used the tremolo pedal in the same way in the song, Under Your Wings. The title of Dawnstar's Denied Again might have been inspired by Portishead's Undenied.

Indie-rock era
The mid 2000s indie rock revival has had an impact on Wind's songwriting style. Actually when he was asked to label Dawnstar's music style he often described as indie-rock. However, later he refused to call Dawnstar's music as indie-rock. One of the main bands he was listening to was the American Interpol but he also liked band such as Arctic Monkeys, The Kooks, and Franz Ferdinand. The classic indie-rock guitar style can be heard on songs like, Live Today and London Nights.

Pop music
It is undeniable that Wind's songwriting has been influenced by pop music. During the composition of Saturnine Valentines Wind was listening to 2010s pop music, or more precisely sad-core. One of his main influences have been Hurts and Lana Del Rey. However, the influence of pop music was completed by Wham! and George Michael's songwriting. For example Wind modeled Dawnstar's Love's Gonna Be Tender on Wham!'s Freedom,
